Ellen DeGeneres made a public service announcement against Proposition 8, which would enshrine marriage inequality into the California constitution. Take a look:
There are people out there raising millions of dollars to try and take that right away from me. You’ve seen their ads on TV. They’re twisting the truth, and they’re trying to scare you. I believe in fairness. I believe in compassion. I believe in equality for all people. Proposition 8 does not.
Please, please, vote NO on Prop. 8.
Can you help fight inequality and unfairness in California?

Nice she’s spoken up, I hope she has donated too. It costs money to run ads.
And focus groups of undecided voters break 2-1 against Prop 8 — after they’ve seen our ads and their ads.
We need money to get ads on the air. Please help if you can.
I’m so glad Ellen has spoken out about this. Wish others would. I gave some money the other day and hope they can run lots of ads.
The Prop 8 people are playing the fear card running an ad now that says public school second graders will by law be taught boys can marry boys if the supreme court ruling stands. Pretty awful but effective at the same time.
iirc, that’s based on a Massachusetts case where fundie parents tried to ban a book from the school library, “King and King,” about a prince who loved another prince. The book is entirely age-appropriate and is especially helpful, teachers testified, in a jurisdiction where men can actually, you know, marry each other legally.
The Yes On 8 folks are pulling every fear card, lie, and smear to win. We need to get more of our ads on the air — they work. Please help if you can.
I’d like to see that spot on TV. I’ve hestitated to give to no on prop 8 because their ads that I’ve seen so far have been really bad and weak, like they are afraid they are on the losing side.
Having real people saying: please don’t take my marriage away, please don’t take my brother’s/sister’s/son’s/daughter’s marriage rights away, is much stronger.
I’ll pay for good ads.
Nice spot. But she’d have done better to say “people who vote for Prop 8 are trying to force me to divorce my wife, to annul our marriage against our will.”
Proposition 8 destroys marriages.
We’ve seen the yes on 8 ads on tv over the past week. So chuck full o lies and just plain ridiculous. It really plays to the lizard brain.
Off to donate to the cause
I guess we can all try to come up with better ads than the No On Prop 8 campaign has, given the luxury of unlimited time and unlimited money. But here’s the thing — they aren’t necessarily the ads I would make, but the No ads work. Uncommitted voters break 2-1 after being shown the Yes ads and the No ads.
That is the definition of a “good ad.”
So, instead of trying to come up with ads we think would work for us, or ads we’d like to make, let’s support ads that sway uncommitted voters: the No On Prop 8 ads. They work. Support them, please.
Thank ye, ‘bits!
Direct, from the heart, and to the point.
Nicely done, Ellen. Let’s hope it gets some good airtime and reaches the folks in the middle who are tired of the fearmongering from the right.
done.
Happy to do it, Teddy
Why oh WHY won’t they mention that it is OUT-OF-STATE MORMONS (among others) trying to manipulate Californians? I’m sorry, but the No on 8 campaign generally has been unbelievably poor, and not because of money. Any smart kid with a videocam could do better. They seem incapable of kicking ass in the way they need to. We’re screwed.
New ad calls out the out-of-state special interests: see it here.
